There are about a dozen different species of Opuntia Genus family (Prickly Pear Cactus) and these are found in the North America deserts. These cactus have a flat fleshy pad which could be taken as leaves that really look like pads with one connected to another like a stem. These pads contain water and have spines called glochids. These glochids are something to watch out for because if you get pierced with them they are very painful and difficult to remove.
