Losing weight for most of us is not our favorite thing to do, but our heart would really appreciate it if we did. Dropping excess weight is an important step to reduce heart disease. Excess weight increases the strain on the heart and also contributes to high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.
Approximately 1/3 of the the US population weighs 20% over their ideal weight. Most of us don't have to go to the doctor to find out we need to lose some weight. The mirror and the scales are pretty good ways for us to become aware that we need to lose some weight. When we have our physicals each year we are told what our blood pressure is, our cholesterol is and we find out that our LDL is higher than it is suppose to be.
We need to get serious about making a life style change. Leanology Weight Loss system has given us a much less painful way to get rid of those excess pounds and enjoy doing it. A health professional can help you determine how much weight you need to lose by measuring your body fat with a caliper. Then you can determine what percentage you are over weight.
Fat around the heart may increase heart attack risk.
A recent study from Wake Forest University indicates that having excess fat around the heart may also be a health risk. Even a thin person can have fat around the heart. Pericardial fat or stores of fat around the heart is known to cause higher secretion of inflammatory substances, which may accelerate the development of heart disease.
Where we carry excess weight and our body shape can impact our heart health too. An example of this is people who waist is nearly as large as or larger than their hips have a higher rate of heart disease. To determine your waist to hip ratio, measure your waist just above the navel. Measure your hips at their widest. Divide your waist measurement by your hip measurement. A waist to hip ratio greater than 0.8 for women and 0.95 for men indicates higher heart disease risk.
